Byzantine Icon

Icons are painted images of saints and other holy people. In this modern example (maybe 20 years old), Jesus is exquisitely painted on a wooden, carved placard in Mateora Greece.
Icons were an important part of the Byzantine Christian Church from the 3rd century onward. Venerated in churches, public places, and private homes, icon paintings were believed to have protective properties.
